Range Report

Jim Shaver presented a written report to the Executive Committee as follows:

To: Executive Committee

From: J. Shaver

Date: 02/26/2016

Subject: February 2016 Range Report

  1. The initial Range Committee meeting was held 02/17 at the ADPS Range and Training Center. Minutes were issued and circulated to the Executive Committee. Items deferred to the Executive Committee for action:
  2.
  3. Committee’s proposed charter,
  4. Distribution of published meeting minutes,
  5. Roles and responsibilities – RSO Program,
  6. Restrictions on use of steel targets,
  7. A notice to members advising of the Rifle Range closure on Monday, March 7.
  8.
The plate rack is back in service. The club owes George Laverick a debt of gratitude for the effort he put into designing, building, and coordinating the installation of the ricochet shield. Some additional shielding will be needed to protect specific areas of the unit from ricochet damage as well as to reduce the open area in the back. One of the posts supporting the orange safety fencing used for target backing on the rifle range collapsed. New posts have been installed and the plastic fencing replaced.Shot up / broken 1”x 2”s and used cardboard target backing was removed from all ranges and placed in the dumpster. We need to encourage shooters to toss their well used target backing and destroyed 1x2s in the dumpster and not leave them for others to clean up.1”x 2”s for target stands were purchased and placed in the connex storage unit.Purchased 20 - 1x2s, 2 - 4x4s, 1 – 2x4, and a box of treated deck screws for items 3 and 5 above at Lowe’s. Total cost was $97.83Range attendance statistics (based on sign-in logs):

George Laverick reported that someone has already shot several holes in the top crossbeam of the plate rack baffle.

Several "shot up" cans were found in the trash on the left pistol range. Per our General Range Rules, cans are considered "junk" targets and are not permitted. Also, since there are no supports on the left pistol range, the cans were likely shot on the ground. This is also a violation.

Armorer's Report

Kevin Lilly reported no changes to the status of the Club's firearms.

Old Business

Fence: Jim Samsel has been unable to get a response from Mark Jackson about purchasing/trading a strip of land along the back edge of the range property so he will proceed with getting quotes for clearing the currently marked fence line.

New Business

Range Committee: Jim Shaver proposed the following charter for the Range Committee which the Executive Committee then approved:

"To plan and execute programs to maintain and improve physical facilities and appearance of the ranges."

The committee has a few members now, but additional club members are encouraged to join the committee.

Jim Shaver will send the minutes of Range Committee meetings to the members of the Executive Committee.

RSO (FRO) Program: Jim Shaver and George Laverick will meet to determine responsibilities and operating procedures for the range officer program.

Steel Targets: Jim Shaver noted that we need to re-install steel targets on our ranges, and he asked what restrictions apply. Fixed steel targets are not generally a problem when properly installed. Movable steel targets were removed from the ranges because members were putting them in unsafe locations.

Extended Rifle Range: Jim Shaver brought a diagram of a possible modification to the existing rifle range so that it could be used as both a 100yd and 200yd range without extending behind the pistol ranges. The existing firing line would be used for both. The Range Committee will walk the area to determine feasibility on Monday, March 7, 2016. THE OUTDOOR RANGE WILL BE CLOSED FROM 8AM UNTIL NOON ON MONDAY, MARCH 7, 2016!

FONRA Banquet: The FONRA (Friends of the NRA) Banquet will be held March 18, 2016 at the USCA Convocation Center. Doors open at 5:30PM, Dinner about 7:00PM.

Vice President: Joe Podesta announced his resignation effective March 24, 2016 (he is moving to Oregon). This leaves the club with two openings to fill. We need a member to join the Executive Committee as Vice President; this position requires attendance at the Executive Committee meeting once a month and running said meeting on the few occasions when the President is unable to attend. We also need a member (who must be a certified Range Safety Officer) to take over running the indoor range one night a week (currently Tuesday, but that can be changed to suit the member's schedule). Please contact any Officer of the Club if you would like to fill either (or both) of these positions.

The next Executive Committee meeting will be at 7:00PM on March 27, 2016 at the ADPS Indoor Range, 240 Dupont Drive, Aiken, SC.

Respectfully submitted,

George Laverick

Secretary
