March 22, 2015 Executive Committee Meeting Minutes

The meeting was called to order by President, Jim Samsel. Officers present were Jim Samsel, Joe Podesta, David Nichols, George Laverick, and Kevin Lilly. Several members were present in addition to the officers.

The minutes of the February 22, 2015 Executive Committee meeting were read by George Laverick and were accepted with corrections.

Treasurer's Report

The Treasurer was absent, so no report was given.

Range Report

David Nichols and Jim Samsel reported that the range is looking very clean. David has been ill, so he has not been able to work on the tractor tire. George Laverick reported that he had found a substantial amount of .223 and .308 brass on the right pistol range. Members need to be aware that center-fire rifles are NOT ALLOWED on the right pistol range.

Armorer's Report

George Laverick has delivered the club's slings to Kevin Lilly; otherwise no change.

Old Business

Range Officers: Jim Samsel reported that we have 14 volunteers for RSO training. Daniel Wood suggested (via email) that the training be held in April on two days, a weekday and a weekend.

Budget: A proposed budget was sent out to the membership with the newsletter. The Executive Committee approved the budget as presented.

RSO Training Equipment: The Executive Committee authorized George Laverick to purchase a projector, spare bulb, case, interface cable, and projection screen for the RSO training at an estimated cost of about $625.

Picture ID Badges: The Executive Committee authorized George Laverick to purchase badge holders, lanyards and thermal paper for picture id badges. All members will eventually need to provide pictures. Passport type pictures are ideal (these can be obtained from CVS/Walgreens for about $10); scanned images from your Driver's License will also work. Members can also come to the range whenever we are giving an Orientation Program, and we will take your picture (the next Orientation Programs are scheduled for April 18 at 9:30AM and April 19 at 2:00PM).

Range Fence/Survey: Jim Samsel met with a surveyor who proposed surveying the range, locating the pistol and rifle ranges on the plat and registering the plat with Aiken County. The Executive Committee approved spending up to $2500.00 to have the work done. The surveyor suggested we locate the fence along our driveway (a couple hundred feet inside the property line) to avoid the gully behind the rifle range.

New Business

Center-Fire Rifles on Right Pistol Range: At the request of a member he talked to at the range, George Laverick brought up the subject of possibly allowing center-fire rifles on the right pistol range since we already have another rule prohibiting their use on steel targets. After discussion, which included both the officers and members present, the consensus was that the rule should not be changed. No motion was made, and no vote was taken.

New Members: The Executive Committee approved 4 new members and tentatively approved 2 more pending receipt of completed paperwork. All have completed the Orientation Program. One current member has taken the Orientation Program. All current members are invited and encouraged to participate in the Orientation Program (you do need to sign up in advance to take the class; call or email the Secretary at 803-400-3590 or

Plate Rack: The problem with the plate rack was discussed. Dave Eggenberger volunteered to act as Project Coordinator to determine what actions need to be taken to make the plate rack safe.

M1 Garands: A member raised the question of loaning the M1's to members. Club policy is that they will be available for club sponsored matches, but a member is needed to volunteer to run those matches. The member in question said he wanted to use one of the rifles to shoot at matches at Mid-Carolina in Columbia; this is not in keeping with the club policy. The Armorer is working on a new policy, but has not completed it.

The meeting was adjourned at approximately 8:30PM.

The next Executive Committee meeting will be at 7:00PM on April 26, 2015 at the ADPS Indoor Range, 240 Dupont Drive, Aiken, SC.

In order to reduce rule violations and improve safety, the club is planning to establish a cadre of Range Officers to serve on a rotating schedule. It has been approved that these members will receive a free annual membership. They would be required to become NRA Range Safety Officers. There would be no cost to the member for the training which would be conducted by George Laverick who is an NRA certified Chief Range Safety Officer. Anyone wishing to be a Range Officer for the club should contact George at 803-649-4921 or

Respectfully submitted,

George Laverick
