August 24, 2014 Executive Committee Meeting Minutes

The meeting was called to order by President, Jim Samsel. Officers present were Jim Samsel, Joe Podesta, George Laverick, Roger Ward, David Nichols, and Kevin Lilly. Two members were present in addition to the officers.

The minutes of the previous meeting were accepted as read by George Laverick.

Treasurer's Report

The Treasurer's report was given by Roger Ward.

Range Report

David Nichols reported no changes.

Armorers Report

Kevin Lilly reported no changes to the status of the club rifles. George Laverick is holding one of the .22s for Kevin to install new sights and magazines.

Old Business

Fence: George Laverick reported that he had gone out to the range before the meeting to check on fence progress. All clearing has been completed, and some fill dirt has been added and graded along Old Chalk Bed Rd. No fence has been installed yet. George will call Boyd Fence tomorrow to check status.

NOTE: Per telephone call on 8/25, They were going to start installation that day. Jim Samsel visited the range on 8/26, and they were digging post holes.

Indoor Range: Range Officer Orientation by ADPS was held on 8/10. We now have four Range Officers approved by the City to oversee the indoor range.

Triangle: Jim Samsel contacted Mark Jackson about the For Sale sign on the “Triangle”. Apparently the sign was put up by Mark's father (deceased) several years ago, and the land is now owned by his mother. Mark contacted her, but she is not prepared to sell any land at this time. If she decides later to sell, Mark will contact the Club.

Range Rules: Signs listing the amended range rules have been purchased and installed at each of the firing lines. The new signs are larger, and should be easier to read than the old ones.

New Business

No new business was introduced.

General Discussions

ADPS is currently in the bidding process for refurbishment of the indoor range. They have indicated that they will consider allowing the use of .22 rimfire rifles in the pistol bay once the refurbishment is completed.

There is a new gun store in Aiken, “Crescent Armory”, located on Silver Bluff Road next to “A Pizza De Napoli” (adjacent to Centre South strip mall). They are open Tuesday thru Saturday.

There is also a small gun shop on Dougherty Rd. The owner has indicated he wants to open an indoor range on Silver Bluff Rd.

There are currently 6 on the waiting list for membership (2 more added after meeting).

The meeting was adjourned at 7:30 PM.

The next Executive Committee meeting will be held September 28, 2014 at 7:00 PM at the ADPS Indoor Range, 240 Dupont Dr., Aiken.

To help members who temporarily mislay their keycards, a member may leave a deposit of $35.00 with the Secretary to receive a temporary keycard. Upon return of the keycard, the deposit will be returned. Note: this service will NOT be available between 9/16/2014 and 10/08/2014.

Members have raised issues about the condition of the range. There are a number of tasks which need to be accomplished to bring the range up to where we all would like to see it. Unfortunately, the members tend to rely on the officers to get these things done. Keep in mind, that the officers are all volunteers (some of whom have served for many years), and they have lives outside of the Club. They simply cannot do all these things themselves. We need help from the membership! Members do not necessarily need to do the work themselves. What is needed are organizers/managers to see that the work gets done. If funding is neede, the Club is willing to provide it; just tell the Executive Committee how much is need and what will be accomplished; if it is worthwhile, the money will be authorized. If you are willing to help, please contact any officer.

Respectfully submitted,

George Laverick, Secretary
