November 25, 2012 Executive Committee Meeting Minutes

The meeting was called to order by President, Jim Samsel. Officers present were Jim Samsel, Joe Podesta, George Laverick,David Nichols, Kevin Lilly, and Roger Ward. Several members and guests were also present.

Minutes of the October 28, 2012 meeting were read by George Laverick, and were accepted as read with correction of one minor omission.

Treasurer's Report

The Treasurers report was given by Roger Ward. Members wishing to know more detail should contact the Treasurer directly..

Armorer's Report

Kevin Lilly reported that all of the club's rifles have been returned.

Range Report

David Nichols reported that he had purchased new brooms for the ranges that are rated for concrete surfaces and that he had put some new 1x2s at the ranges. He also cleaned up some old materials and straightened the pins on some target stands. There was a lot of .22 caliber brass than someone had not cleaned up. Jim reported that he had seen wasps in the port-a-potty so we need to put some wasp spray out.

Old Business

Jim Samsel reported that he asked Phil Kestin about advertising the ADPS range use on the website, and that Phil preferred we not do so. Phil also indicated that we can hold club sponsored training programs at the ADPS range, but commercial training, e.g., CWP training is not permitted.

Jim discussed Range Officers for the indoor range with Phil Kestin. Currently the only ADPS approved Range Officers are Joe Podesta and George Laverick. Frank Moore and David Nichols are qualified, but need an orientation session with Phil Kestin. Phil agreed that we could have a total of eight approved Range Officers.

Jim has received an email suggesting that we financially support NJROTC programs at the local high schools. A number of possible ways of distributing money were discussed (grants, competitions, etc.). Also, we would have to decide what schools would be included since the membership of the club, although spread over a fairly wide area is concentrated in the Aiken area. Kevin Lilly pointed out that the NJROTC programs are eligible to request grants from the Friends of the NRA (FONRA). Jim asked Kirk Shanahan to find out more about what schools have NJROTC programs and what kind of support they need.

The club already has applications in excess of the membership limit of 250. An informal survey of the members indicates that the range has not been overcrowded. Jim suggested that we either need to raise or eliminate that limit. Joe Podesta moved that the limit be changed to 350. Roger felt that increasing the cap by 100 was too much, he would much prefer 50. Joe amended his motion to change the membership limit to 300. The motion passed.

ADPS has agreed to 8 Range Officers for the indoor range. Eight members expressed interest in the addition positions. Five of those attended the meeting and one of the five is already NRA certified. Bill Bigelow has purchased the training materials and is willing to teach the course. Since there are more training slots than we need range officers, we could train additional members as future replacements. Joe Podesta moved that we authorize reimbursement for Bill Bigelow for seven training packets and that a class be scheduled for seven Range Safety Officer candidates. Kevin Lilly seconded the motion. The motion passed with one opposing vote.

Joe Podesta reported on the status of the 200/300 yard range. Joe has written an initial specification for the ground work to be done. There will have to be berms at the sides to protect the property line and the 100 yard range; these will not be included in the initial specification, but will be dealt with later. Concrete pad, shelter, etc., will also be dealt with later. The range itself is for 12 shooting positions (10 + 2 dummies) plus a fifteen foot buffer on each side.

New Business

Eight new members were accepted into the club.

Because of Christmas, George Laverick moved that the December meeting be held on the third Sunday (December 16) rather than the fourth Sunday.

Joe Podesta moved that the meeting be adjourned, Kevin Lilly seconded the motion, and it was approved.

Please note that the next meeting (December 16, 2012 at the ADPS Indoor Range) is the last meeting before our Annual Meeting and Election of Officers. Officers for 2012 will be nominated at the December meeting. If you would like to become an officer or know a member who would, please either contact one of the current officers or come to the December meeting.

George Laverick
