August 23, 2012 Executive Committee Meeting Minutes

The meeting was called to order by President, Jim Samsel at 7:15 PM. Officers present were Jim Samsel, Joe Podesta, George Laverick, and Kevin Lilly. Several members and guests were also present.

Minutes

Minutes of the July 22, 2012 meeting were read by George Laverick, and were accepted as read.

Treasurer's Report

Since the Treasurer was not present, no Treasurers Report was given.

Armorer's Report

All but one of the M1s has been returned. The member who has the last M1 is currently out of the Country; the Armorer will contact him upon his return.

Range Report

President, Jim Samsel, reported that the grass on the rifle range will be mowed this weekend and that the barricades for Paragon have been repaired. General cleanup of the range is being performed.

Old Business

Joe Podesta proposed that we pay to clear a path down the center of the pr0posed rifle range to make it easier for a contractor to determine what needs to be done to build the range. A motion was made and passed to authorize $200.00 for the clearing.

A discussion was held about what to do with the M1s once we get them back. The need to establish rules for their use and a re-valuation was expressed. No formal action was taken.

Joe Podesta moved that the club reimburse George Laverick for taking the NRA Range Safety Officer class; seconded by Kevin Lilly. The motion passed.

Joe Podesta, Jim Samsel, George Laverick and Henry Krippner met with Phil Krespin of ADPS for an orientation and tour of the ADPS indoor range. The Aiken City Council is due to take a second vote on an amendment to the city ordinance to allow indoor shooting ranges. We will not be able to use the range until after that amendment is passed. A discussion was held about buying tables to use to place weapons and ammunition on at the firing line of the indoor range. The biggest problem encountered was where to store the tables. The officers agreed that we did not want a key to the storage room at the range since ADPS stores their ammo their and we did not want any problems if the ammo count came up short.

The assumption was made that the City Council cote would take place on August 24. This proved to be incorrect. The vote is actually scheduled for September 10.

New Business

One new member was accepted into the club. Membership is now at 218.

George Laverick presented a membership renewal notice for Gun Owners of South Carolina. Joe Podesta moved that we renew for three years at a cost of $40; seconded by Jim Samsel. Approved.

George Laverick presented as set of proposed rules to follow once we reach the membership cap (currently 250). It was decided that these would be sent out with the newsletter for comments by the members. Currently, the Bylaws allow a member to be as late as 6 months in renewing before the membership lapses and would become available to a new member. Several officers expressed concern that this should be changed to shorten the time period and/or to invoke a fee for re-instating lapsed memberships.

David Nichols applied for the vacant position of Executive Officer. He was unanimously approved.

David indicated he would like to attend the Range Safety Officer class. Joe Podesta moved to authorize payment for David Nichols to attend Range Safety Officer Training. Seconded by Kevin Lilly. Approved.

Joe Podesta moved to adjourn the meeting. Seconded by Kevin Lilly. Approved.

ADPS Indoor Range

On September 10, 2012, the Aiken City Council passed an amendment allowing indoor shooting ranges in the city. This was the removes the final impediment to SRR&PC resuming use of the ADPS Indoor Range. Range rules for the indoor range differ from those applicable to our outdoor ranges. A copy of the rules for the indoor range is attached to this newsletter in both Microsoft Word and Adobe PDF formats.

Until further notice, club usage of the indoor range will be from 7:00 to 9:00 PM on Tuesday and Thursday evenings beginning September 18, 2012 and is subject to preemption by law enforcement agencies.

Remember, the club is using these facilities at the invitation of the City of Aiken, and that invitation may be withdrawn at any time. It is important that every member take care to not discredit the club in the eyes of the city.

Executive Committee Meetings

Beginning September 23, 2012, the Executive Committee meetings will be held at 7:00 PM on the fourth Sunday of each month in the meeting room of the ADPS indoor range located at 240 Dupont Drive in Aiken.
